In dieser Grafik von Arnold Barmettler sieht man den Verlauf der ringförmigen Sonnenfinsternis am 15. Januar 2010 in Male auf den Malediven. Alle angegebenen Zeiten sind Ortszeiten (UTC +5 Stunden). Die Sonnenfinsternis begann bei Sonnenuntergang zwischen Peking und Shanghai und endete bei Sonnenaufgang über Zentralafrika. Während die Sonne über dem asiatischen Kontinent und über Afrika nur teilweise verdeckt war (partiell), war sie über einem Teil des Indischen Ozeans, über den Malediven und über Sri Lanka ringförmig zu sehen. Da die Bahn des Mondes um die Erde nicht kreisförmig, sondern elliptisch verläuft, ist der Mond manchmal größer (Erdnähe) und manchmal kleiner (Erdferne) zu sehen und wenn der Mond genau vor der Sonne steht, bedeckt er sie manchmal vollständig (Totale Sonnenfinsternis bei Mond in Erdnähe) und manchmal, so wie am 15. Januar 2010, erscheint der Mond kleiner und von der Sonne ist rund um den Mond noch ein schmaler Streifen zu sehen (Ringförmige Sonnenfinsternis bei Mond in Erdferne). Die Ringförmigkeit dauerte in Male 11 ½ Minuten lang.
